First Day in New York

This is my third time in New York and I've decided to try new things in this city. So on day one I went exploring the Hudson Bay park area. Its all been done up on the west side of mnhattan island with cycleways parks and recreation facilities. I then wandered back through Soho and NYU back to my friend Karl's, and had lunch along University Place.

I had got in touch with an old friend through politics - Ashley - who has just moved down to teach and research at New York's Colombia Business School. He and I have always got along really well - and so Tuesday night I was given a great tour of the lower east side - starting at Schillers Bar/Restaurant, we then basically did a pub crawl of the best and worst bars that the lower east side had to offer.

Saying goodbye to Toronto

I have always got along well with Canadians. I am so glad I finally made it to Canada to visit some of the people I've previously met.

When you look at it we do have a lot in common – heavy British cultural influences, both huge countries with massive natural assets yet both our populations cling to a small part of each respective place. The language isn’t too far apart from ours either – I do like the Canadian “out and about … ay !”

Canadians can be quiet and reserved but they also have a great energy – no wonder they beat Australia in a recent survey to get the title of “friendliest people”.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Toronto – I got great weather, enjoyed the tourist sites such as CN Tower and Niagara Falls, saw a bit of Ontario’s parliament and for the most part just hung out with friends – especially on the many “patio” areas of restaurants and bars. I even found some great coffee – must be the migrant influence here (which has a really similar mix to Sydney).

I even heard one of the best dance remixes Sat night of Midnight Oil’s “Beds are burning” which really surprised me J The crowd was pumping – though it was an electronic music dj so at first it was all a bit heavy.. but then it picked up after a while.

While I was here I really got a good chance to sit back and think. One thing I spoke to others about is technology and its impact on people. Is spending more time alone or at home a good thing? Should we be interacting in group social environments ? Is socializing in person doomed because of the internet. And on that note I am noticing that facebook is taking off rapidly back home ( it is very popular here in Toronto).

Saturday afternoon excursion to the island

On Saturday afternoon, I caught up with some friends i had met in Puerta Vallarta at the end of 2005. Darren and Rob. They live here in Toronto too and I had forgotten just how many Torontians were down in Mexico when we were there. (I also got to see some of them here on Thursday night - many are headed back to PV this year).

We went over to the main beach in Toronto - located a short 15min ferry ride from the downtown area, on Lake Ontario. The island was so busy - lots of people on bikes, also rollerblades and a myriad of watercraft too. It was really hot over there..and was great to get into the cool water over there too !!! (and it reminded me a lot of Oslo in Norway which has a similar set up.)

Niagara Falls - part 1

My friend Jonathan played an excellent tour guide on Friday. We drove about 2.5 hours south of Toronto to Niagara Falls which is located on the US/Canadian border (The bulk of the falls are on the Canadian side). It is a really majestic site - lots of mist - you can get quite wet along some parts of the viewing area. I was very impressed.

Niagara Falls Part 2

You can see here the bridge connecting the US and Canada at Niagara Falls, we then drove back along the scenic route - seeing a whirlpool then the historic town of Niagara on the Lake.
